Laughter Yoga® is an exercise routine developed by Dr. Madan Kataria. The program is based on the idea that the body cannot differentiate between real and fake laughter. Laughter Yoga® combines laughter exercises with deep diaphragmatic breathing to provide the most uniquely fun and powerful body-mind exercise around. This program can be done by anyone!
Clinical research has supported the idea by showing positive physiological and emotional changes as a result from non-humor based laughter. A 2006 study by Laughter Yoga International conducted in Bangalore, India proved that laughter lowers levels of blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol, and perceived stress. Further research showed that non-humor based laughter increases positive emotions, self-awareness, and overall competencies (Beckman, Regier, & Young, 2007).
Laughter Yoga® helps lower the negative effects of stress, which is a catalyst for health problems. Conversely, laughter lowers blood pressure, relaxes muscles, improves blood circulation, increases oxygen levels in the body, elevates mood, brings hope, and boosts the immune system, all of which are essential parts of maintaining good health. With no previous yoga experience required, various hospitals, wellness centers, senior centers, and cancer support centers have utilized Laughter Yoga®.
Typical length of a Laughter Yoga® session is 1 hour with intermittent water breaks. For best results, it is offered weekly for 8 consecutive weeks or longer. This program can be offered one on one or in a group setting.
